First stage of the International Survey of Adult Skills PIAAC (OECD) has started in Kazakhstan

PIAAC is a large scale survey of numeracy and literacy (basic competencies) level of population aged 16-65. Respondents will have an opportunity to take part in the survey either in computer or paper format.

In the first stage (August-November 2017) will participate adults from Astana city, Akmola, Aktobe, Atyrau, East-Kazakhstan, West-Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Kostanay, Kyzylorda, Mangystau, Pavlodar and North-Kazakhstan regions.

Second stage will be run in 2018 (January-April). Participants are Almaty city as well as Almaty, Zhambyl and South-Kazakhstan regions.

At minimum 6 000 adults all over Kazakhstan proportionally represented across major socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age, education, labor market status and place of living) will take part in the survey.

The project is coordinated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). National coordinator of the PIAAC in Kazakhstan is JSC “Information-Analytic Center” of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Participation of Kazakhstan in PIAAC will allow to:

  • Get independent international assessment of the potential and competitiveness of the country’s adult population
  • Assess the effectiveness of the education system in preparing students for the labor market
  • Provide recommendations for developing and implementing lifelong learning system in Kazakhstan

Results of 37 PIAAC participating countries, including 28 OECD countries will be published in 2019.
