Kazakhstan for the 1st time will participate in PIRLS study

In April 2016, for the first time in Kazakhstan will take part in the PIRLS-2016 study (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) among 50 countries. The international coordinator of the research is the International association for the evaluation of educational achievement (IEA).

Kazakhstan will be represented by more than 4,000 students of 4th grade. The entire international sample selected IEA 174 organizations of general secondary education. The greatest number of schools – South Kazakhstan (38), Almaty region (18), Aktobe and Karaganda region (13), East Kazakhstan (12).


The study PIRLS is one of the most representative studies of the independent international assessment of the level of reading competencies of primary school students.

A questionnaire survey will involve not only students but also their parents, teachers and school administration. Overall, the survey results are sufficiently informative material, giving the opportunity to obtain the basic characteristics of educational organizations, students, teachers and parents. The information obtained in the survey, will allow for a more complete basis to identify the factors affecting the results of the students and to outline future prospects the results of the main study PIRLS-2016 in April 2016.

At this stage the work on selection of students from among the fourth-graders from 16 regions of the country.
