PISA

OVERVIEW

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international study that measures 15-year-old students’ reading, mathematics, and science literacy every three years. The study is held by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development every three years. PISA measures learning outcomes by assessing how well 15-year-olds who are approaching the completion of compulsory education in most participating countries are prepared to use the knowledge and skills needed to participate fully in social and economic life to solve real-life problems and challenges.

Starting from PISA-2015, the assesment has been carried out mainly in a computer format. The sample of PISA participants is formed from school and college students who are between 15 years 3 months to 16 years 2 months at the time of the start of the field study and main survey data collection. In each cycle, one of the three areas is identified as the main one for a more in-depth assessment. Assessment takes place in the form of a two-hour test. Each test form includes four 30-minute blocks of tasks. In addition to the test, students fill out personal data, which will be used to analyze the factors that influence the development of their skills. PISA also includes measurements of general or interdisciplinary competencies such as collaborative problem solving or global competence.

The study allows to assess whether students who have received general compulsory education have the knowledge and skills necessary for full functioning in society (functional literacy). PISA results provide an opportunity to compare different education systems and use the experience of leading OECD countries in developing national education strategies.
